In Costa Rica 78.8% of primary schools do not have libraries. During the period 2010-2011 the Ministry of Culture and Youth conducted a survey on reading practices in Costa Rica, the results showed that 51% of Costa Ricans did not read any book and 59% did not buy any book. We are helping change all of this.
Good reading habits start at an early age, but one has to have access to books. Our reading program installs small libraries with 200 books of classic Spanish, British, and American children's literature books. It actively promotes reading with song and dance, puppet shows, storytelling, and theatre. Our lessons boost writing and thinking skills, expand creativity and promote critical analysis. Over the next 4 years our goal is to set up 15 library and reading projects. We’ve done four already!
